Ashby Evergreen Charter School is a proposed regional public charter school planned to open in Fall 2027
Serving students from Fitchburg, Ashby, Townsend, and Pepperell. Ashby Evergreen will combine rigorous academics with play, exploration, daily outdoor learning, and meaningful connections to the world around us.
Located on a forested campus in Ashby, our school will be rooted in the belief that children thrive when they have time to move, play, explore, ask questions, and develop confidence in their own ability to learn.
Inspired by the internationally-acclaimed Finnish approach to education and grounded in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, Ashby Evergreen will offer a unique, tuition-free public-school experience.
We are creating a school where every child is known, curiosity is valued, resilience is cultivated, and learning is connected to the community and natural world around us.
Ashby Evergreen Charter School is in development. Our charter application is currently under review and will require a recommendation from the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education and approval by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education in February 2027 before the school can open as proposed in fall 2027.
A different kind of public school.
Charter schools are public schools. They are tuition-free, open to all students, and accountable to Massachusetts’ academic standards. What makes a charter school different is the opportunity to rethink how those standards are met.
Ashby Evergreen is using that opportunity intentionally.
We know that children learn through play. We are designing a school where learning extends beyond the classroom, play is part of childhood and part of learning, teachers have the freedom to respond to their students, and every child is given the support and time they need to grow. Our model includes daily outdoor learning and play, frequent movement breaks, and project-based learning that allows children to follow their curiosity, engage their creativity, and become part of an integrated learning community.
The SISU curriculum will be the basis of this new school, adapted to the Massachusetts state-defined learning standards and our own unique setting.
We believe academic excellence and childhood well-being belong together. Children should be challenged, and they should also have time to wonder, explore, make things, solve problems, get messy, and simply be children.

Ashby Evergreen Charter School is currently in development. Our charter application is underway with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and we are working toward a target opening in Fall 2027.
If approved, Ashby Evergreen will open with students in grades K–4 and grow one grade level at a time toward serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
